The Science
Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) works by blocking neuromuscular transmission at the injection site. Normally, when your brain sends a signal to contract a muscle, acetylcholine is released at the neuromuscular junction — the point where nerve meets muscle fiber. Botulinum toxin type A cleaves a specific protein called SNAP-25, which is essential for acetylcholine release. Without acetylcholine, the nerve signal cannot reach the muscle. The muscle remains relaxed, and the overlying skin smooths.
The effect is temporary because your body gradually regenerates new nerve terminals and SNAP-25 protein — typically over 3–4 months. This is why consistent maintenance is important: by treating every 3–4 months before the effect fully wears off, you prevent the muscles from rebuilding the strength that creates deeper lines.
